I thought it might be a good day to take a rest from the very delicious calorie laden sweet delights and turn our attention to those who might be overlooked at Christmas. I know everyone leaves a special treat for Santa (perhaps milk and cookies, beer and pretzels, whiskey and Christmas cake?), but what about the hard working reindeer? I know my grandchildren leave a carrot on the front lawn and it always has a rather large bite out of it on Christmas morning so I'm guessing reindeer enjoy a fresh crunchy carrot. Other reindeer food also serves the purpose of a navigation aid for the reindeer .
Here is a recipe I found on a Christmas website with a couple of modifications of mine. There is a concern about some glitter, but edible glitter for cake decorating should be fine.
Reindeer Food Recipe
Reindeer Food Recipe
In a small zip lock food storage bag or empty shaker
container, mix:
·
1/2 cup uncooked oatmeal
·
1/2 cup sugar - optional -
·
1/4 cup red or green sugar crystals (as
used for cake decorating)
[Note: many Internet recipes for Magic
Reindeer Food call for craft glitter, which can harm birds or wildlife if ingested.
For safety, substitute coloured sugar crystals or edible glitter for cakes and
be kind to animals!]
There are many variation of the recipe and most come with a printable tag like this one.
Hope you'll be thinking of Rudolph and his friends when shopping for your Christmas food!
