Arty Alphabet 6-9

Continuing - Arty Alphabet in response to the Instagram Challenge  'Every Day Creative A to Z" #everydaycreativeatoz

F  : Felt - Although I wouldn't classify myself as a "felter",I do like to make felt and this is a close up of one of my favourite scarves.
G :  Grevillea Girl - one of series of small whimsical watercolours commissioned as gifts. Inspired by the bush folk by May Gibbs.
H: Hexagons - these small fabric hexagons were stitched together and then appliqued on to a recycled piece from an old tablecloth. The bees are made of tea bag paper and also stitched onto the fabric. This photo is of a section from one of a series of concertina fabric books, entitles "Garden Stories"
I : Indigo . This is a piece of raw silk dyed with indigo. The whole piece used shibori techniques, so each section of the piece shows the results of a different way of manipulating the fabric before dyeing.

Hoping to make it to the end of the alphabet....

Fish and Sticks : Art Dolls

This week I've been working on fish and sticks ....  The sticks are the message stick art dolls which were very popular, attracting some attention and a few orders at the Wise Women exhibition. Each of the message stick dolls are from the Wise Women series, each with her own personality and  message of wisdom, handwritten on a handmade timber tag. I gather the sticks during my walks around my neighbourhood and the tags are made from special bits of timber, some collected by me or  my husband or from off cuts gifted to us  from another doll making friend whose husband makes bagpipes. These dolls start off very simply with a wrap around a stick, in the general shape of a body. 'Naked" message stick dolls - strips of wadding wrapped around found sticks.   Then I usually wrap other layers of fabric, wool, and/or fibres, over which I do some simple embroidery. I sculpt  or mould small face masks for these dolls. I really like using "sari ribbon" as w...

Soft Scape - Olivia Parsonage

from Soft Scape -  Olivia Parsonage I have been a big fan of Olivia Parsonage's work since I discovered her soft sculptures a few years ago, and  since revisiting the  wonderful wall narrative Olivia created for her exhibition at the Newcastle Art Space in 2014, I  have become more enamoured with her people and sense of whimsy too.  Last week, I went to Olivia's exhibition at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery.....  Soft Scape  is an inviting space of colour and texture created by a multitude of fabric scraps. These remnant pieces, often small and destined for disposal, are made important and useful by becoming part of a bigger picture. The different patterns, textures and colours of the fabric appeal to the senses of sight and touch and interaction with the work is encouraged on the floor space, with the movable blocks. ( from the MRAG website) from Soft Scape - Olivia Parsonage  It was exciting to participate in Soft Sca...
