Christmas Countdown Local 2022 - #1/25 "Multicultural at Home "

Red lantern at my front door

Christmas Countdown  Local 2022   #1/25

Each year, I follow a  personal tradition of counting down to Christmas in the month of December in this blog - either recording each day something I have made, seen or researched with a festive theme.  This year 2022,  I am  promoting "local" , staying close to home while  reflecting and researching Christmas sights around my neighbourhood and in my city of Newcastle (NSW Australia).... What better way to start than right here at home!

A couple of days ago, I began to think about how to respect other cultural traditions at Christmas .  To mark the beginning of Advent, I hung a red lantern near our  front door. This may be puzzling as a Chinese paper lantern seems to have little to do with Christmas... but, it does, particularly if you are Chinese and  part of the Christian population which numbers 5.1% of the total  1.4 billion  people in China .

Chinese Christians light up their homes with colorful paper lanterns during Advent, and you might find red paper pagodas cut out and placed in windows.  It has become a Christmas tradition in China .

Is it now easier to understand why my red lantern is part of my Christmas decorating ?
Hope you will drop by and say hello - my house is the one with the red lantern outside!

In the image above,  I think I am really imagining that there are red lanterns hung in  Shanghai’s St Ignatius  Cathedral , restored in 2017 , after being damaged during  China's Cultural Revolution ????  What do you think?

A November project

A few years ago, I began scheduling into my day, the routine of a daily art practice.... seven years later, I still love #the100dayproject and am a strong advocate of "create something, anything, every day" .  In more recent years, I haven't been content with a mere 100 days and have often pursued shorter /or longer projects requiring some daily attention. For example, I completed 145 days of slow stitching my garden and then another 60 day random cross stitch garden.... but that's a digression....  This month, I am being far more practical... I still like to send and give Christmas cards, but am always getting them in the post very late, and trying to make some  special unique cards  for the family the night before.... so all this month, I am making Christmas cards - just one a day. By 30 November, I should have some to choose from for posting within Australia and for giving in December.  Here are my first 4 days ....  If you're wondering why bother ...

Fish and Sticks : Art Dolls

This week I've been working on fish and sticks ....  The sticks are the message stick art dolls which were very popular, attracting some attention and a few orders at the Wise Women exhibition. Each of the message stick dolls are from the Wise Women series, each with her own personality and  message of wisdom, handwritten on a handmade timber tag. I gather the sticks during my walks around my neighbourhood and the tags are made from special bits of timber, some collected by me or  my husband or from off cuts gifted to us  from another doll making friend whose husband makes bagpipes. These dolls start off very simply with a wrap around a stick, in the general shape of a body. 'Naked" message stick dolls - strips of wadding wrapped around found sticks.   Then I usually wrap other layers of fabric, wool, and/or fibres, over which I do some simple embroidery. I sculpt  or mould small face masks for these dolls. I really like using "sari ribbon" as w...

Christmas Countdown 15 : Christmas Tree #11 - Disposable

Plastic cups  https://littlebinsforlittlehands.com/christmas-stem-ideas-kids/ Advent Blog : Day 11 - Disposable  We are all so much more conscious about ridding our landfills and oceans of plastic waste. For Christmas, here is a way to use up some of those disposable items which seem to multiply at holiday parties and celebrations, or perhaps you have just been saving them up for a creative use.... Who would have thought coffee pods would make such stylish Christmas trees ? ... Add caption If you don't have one of those machines, then perhaps you have coffee on the run - Starbucks or Nescafe ?  from  https://www.pinterest.com.au/pin/369858188126737920/ Nescafe cups https://www.pinterest.com.au/pin/72761350208620530/ The disposable cups don' t have to be brand names to work well as materials for Christmas trees. Taking an engineering approach to plastic cup trees seems to be the answer for a more ornate result.  from  https:...
