Where is Wooly? Day 1 and 2 Chinese New Year

"Where is Wooly?" is a Chinese New Year event sponsored by Timeless Textiles Gallery in Newcastle, NSW. This wool felted animal ( sheep/goat) appears each day for eight days in different locations. Anyone who posts photos of Wooly in her various locations on Instagram or Facebook will go into a draw for a lucky red envelope ( containing a Timeless Textiles gift voucher)

Day 1 was very busy. Wooly started the day off with an interview with Jill Emberson on the Morning porgram of ABC radio 1233.

Then, off to location 1. The clue was " Wooly wishes you a Happy New Year and wonders artistically what's around the curve?" Of course, Wooly was at Curve Gallery, 61 Hunter Street, Newcastle East.

Where will Wooly be Day 2 - 20 February? Here's a head's up with the clue....

Fish and Sticks : Art Dolls

This week I've been working on fish and sticks .... The sticks are the message stick art dolls which were very popular, attracting some attention and a few orders at the Wise Women exhibition. Each of the message stick dolls are from the Wise Women series, each with her own personality and message of wisdom, handwritten on a handmade timber tag. I gather the sticks during my walks around my neighbourhood and the tags are made from special bits of timber, some collected by me or my husband or from off cuts gifted to us from another doll making friend whose husband makes bagpipes. These dolls start off very simply with a wrap around a stick, in the general shape of a body. 'Naked" message stick dolls - strips of wadding wrapped around found sticks. Then I usually wrap other layers of fabric, wool, and/or fibres, over which I do some simple embroidery. I sculpt or mould small face masks for these dolls. I really like using "sari ribbon" as w...

Dance .... with leaves and animals

Dancing my way to Tag Tuesday this week for the theme "Dance-Dancers- Dancing" . Here I used torn bits of inked paper with other bits from concert advertising. All I could think of was kinetic energy and how I could convey that as a collage of contemporary dance. I liked the swirls of mark making because they remind of dance painting..... no words can explain this better than the sight of it in action. In the past week, I have also been mesmerised by the beautiful coloured autumn leaves which look as if they are dancing in the breeze as they fall from trees . (Remember, I am in the southern hemisphere so it is just the start of our winter).
