Arty Places #12 - Lambton Spring Art Show

St John the Baptist Anglican Church in Lambton ( Newcastle NSW) became Arty Place #12 in this blog's series of Arty Places last weekend. This was such a great community event and I was so happy to participate in a local "arty" event right in my own neighbourhood.

The show's opening was a special occasion, with my friend and local politician, Sonia Hornery, Member for Wallsend, officiating. This art show also had the best background music - usually at these shows there is pre recorded music over a speaker, but on Friday night, we had the most beautiful harp musical accompaniment and on Saturday, a very accomplished musician on the piano.

While the Spring Art Show has focussed on paintings, a number of artisans attended this year with displays of their work. Here is some of the work in the section of the show where I was.

I didn't sell much, but I had a really lovely time and enjoyed the opportunity to show some of my stuff.

As is my usual practice, if I sell anything, I use the money to buy someone else's art - this is the quirky little ceramic teapot I purchased.

What a wonderful "arty" weekend ... thanks to all the organisers, fellow exhibitors and patrons.

Fish and Sticks : Art Dolls

This week I've been working on fish and sticks .... The sticks are the message stick art dolls which were very popular, attracting some attention and a few orders at the Wise Women exhibition. Each of the message stick dolls are from the Wise Women series, each with her own personality and message of wisdom, handwritten on a handmade timber tag. I gather the sticks during my walks around my neighbourhood and the tags are made from special bits of timber, some collected by me or my husband or from off cuts gifted to us from another doll making friend whose husband makes bagpipes. These dolls start off very simply with a wrap around a stick, in the general shape of a body. 'Naked" message stick dolls - strips of wadding wrapped around found sticks. Reflecting on Christmas Cards Past - November Project Update

It's so close to the end of the month, but honestly, I'm not ready to give up yet. I've only had one day when I was too tired to give any creative attention to making a card. Some other days have been hard to fit in the time as I set myself the goal of taking a photo of a finished little work by 5pm each day. What have I found difficult? - choosing a postage stamp. - coming up with 'different' ideas and bringing the ideas to life quickly - including both stamp and stitch into the design ( occasionally) . - compromising by using some previously stitching samples. - no time for revision. What have I enjoyed? - knowing I will have 30 Christmas cards made , ready for posting by 1 December. - sorting through my stash of beautiful Christmas stamps. - combining media ( although that is also what I found difficult!) . - deciding who will be the recipient of each card. - the focus of crea...
