Gumnutters Dolls Cup Challenge

How lucky am I ? This is the beautiful doll I received in the Gumnutters Doll Group Cup Challenge. It was made by Marg from a small collection of fabrics, lace and an embroidered piece I provided. The Cup Challenge is fun - a "doll challenge" which began at the Gumnutters Christmas in July meeting and finished on Saturday at the December meeting. Each participant provided some fabric and it is rolled inside a cup/coffe mug and the parcels are swapped. The cup is a gift, but each person then makes a doll or something else (if requested) using the fabrics provided. Most unlike me, I chose "pink" and gathered together pink/maroon coordinating fabrics from my stash. Thanks Marg, your interpretation of the bits and pieces I gave you is absolutely beautiful.

There were of course many other fantastic dolls unveiled, including a very richly dressed Santa,  cheeky Christmas elves, and starry angels, and brightly costumed elegant girls. Congratulations to all who participated. Everyone was delighted with their dolls and amazed at how the fabrics were used so creatively.  No doubt, all Gumnutters are thinking about the next challenge?

I didn't have so much work, as my swap partner, Gamarna requested a "bag". Here is my interpretation of her fabrics. The fan design prompted me to choose an Asian theme, so hence the decorative chopsticks as the handles of this bag.  I designed this bag as  a knitting bag and included some knitting needles and wool inside, but it could be used as a shopping bag, too. Hope you like the bag, Gamarna.

Merry Christmas to all Gumnutters - see you in January for an "informal" meeting at my place on  the second Saturday as usual - 9 January 2010.

Christmas Countdown 15 : Christmas Tree #11 - Disposable

Plastic cups  https://littlebinsforlittlehands.com/christmas-stem-ideas-kids/ Advent Blog : Day 11 - Disposable  We are all so much more conscious about ridding our landfills and oceans of plastic waste. For Christmas, here is a way to use up some of those disposable items which seem to multiply at holiday parties and celebrations, or perhaps you have just been saving them up for a creative use.... Who would have thought coffee pods would make such stylish Christmas trees ? ... Taking an engineering approach to plastic cup trees seems to be the answer for a more ornate result.  from  https:...

Fish and Sticks : Art Dolls

This week I've been working on fish and sticks ....  The sticks are the message stick art dolls which were very popular, attracting some attention and a few orders at the Wise Women exhibition. Each of the message stick dolls are from the Wise Women series, each with her own personality and  message of wisdom, handwritten on a handmade timber tag. I gather the sticks during my walks around my neighbourhood and the tags are made from special bits of timber, some collected by me or  my husband or from off cuts gifted to us  from another doll making friend whose husband makes bagpipes. These dolls start off very simply with a wrap around a stick, in the general shape of a body. 'Naked" message stick dolls - strips of wadding wrapped around found sticks.   Then I usually wrap other layers of fabric, wool, and/or fibres, over which I do some simple embroidery. I sculpt  or mould small face masks for these dolls. I really like using "sari ribbon" as w...

Reflecting on Christmas Cards Past - November Project Update

It's  so close to the end of the month, but honestly, I'm not  ready to give up yet. I've only had one day when I was too tired to give any creative attention to making a card. Some other days have been hard to fit in the time as I set myself the goal of  taking a photo of a finished little work by 5pm each day.  What  have I  found difficult?  - choosing a postage stamp. - coming up with 'different' ideas and bringing  the ideas to life quickly  -  including both stamp and stitch into the design ( occasionally) .  - compromising by using some previously stitching samples.  - no time for revision.  What have I enjoyed?  - knowing I will have 30 Christmas cards made , ready for posting by 1 December.  - sorting through my stash of beautiful Christmas stamps.  - combining media ( although that is also what I found difficult!) . - deciding who will be the recipient of each card.  - the focus of crea...
